Halloween costumes don't need to be expensive if you make them yourself, says Tracy Bohren in the Seattle Times article "Halloween costumes that don't cost an arm and leg" by Mary Lou Aguirre. She offers several ideas on how you can make your own cheap costumes and be creative in the process. First start thinking and planning early on. Second, check out the internet such as Matha Stewart or community websites that deal in costume and various thift shops for accessories. Final, check out the things around your house, such as old dresses, bedsheets that can be reused to make costumes.

Cause & Effect Essay

Your first draft of your Cause and Effect essay is DUE October 27th (Monday). This is the essay that you are working on individually.

Mid-Term Essay

On Thursday, I will give you 2 topics. Go home and brainstorm some ideas...prepare...think about it.

On Friday, you will choose 1 prompt and write an essay IN class. You CANNOT use any notes, so please DON'T write your essay at home!!!

You will write it only once. Do the best that you can do!

Week 5: Oct 20-24

Monday- Finish up Group Essay, add a conclusion
Tuesday- Finish up Group Essay
Wednesday- Group Essay due and Peer editing 
Thursday- Prepare for Mid-term Essay

Body Paragraph

The Effects of Cigarette Smoking

The purpose of this essay is to discuss three effects of cigarette smoking, besides the broadly mentioned possibility of developing cancer or dying, which are the smell of smoke, the stained teeth, and the cost of doing it.

The first effect of cigarette smoking, and probably the one that the non-smokers hate the most, is that it permeates everything around it. Smokers usually have smelly hair, breath, clothes, and, if they smoke indoors, a smelly room. The stench of cigarette smoke is very penetrating and hard to remove. Even if the person quits smoking the odor remains for a long time.

The second effect of cigarette smoking is one that most people don’t even take into consideration. It stains the teeth yellow or sometimes even brown. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

These are only three out of many other effects that cigarette smoking can have, but to any sensible person they are more than enough to realize that smoking is bad.

Week 4: Oct 13-17

Monday- Final compare & contrast essay and self-evaluation. Work on Cause & Effect essay
Tuesday- Review basic grammar, Cause & Effect Essay focusing on introduction and thesis statement
Wednesday- Cause & Effect Essay focusing on body paragraphs
Thursday- Computer Lab
Friday- Cause & Effect Essay focusing on conclusion

Final Compare & Contrast Paper

Your final version of your Compare & Contrast paper is due Monday (10/13). Also, hand in your original paper (wrote on the 9/22), first draft, and 2nd draft.

Week 3: Oct 6-10
